Let’s design something meaningful together.
-
We live, breathe, and dream all-things-garden over here. We launched A Mum Who Gardens as a way of helping others create the garden spaces of their dreams, in hopes that they, too, will catch the gardening bug.
-
We believe in keeping things simple, streamlined, and focused on you.
Every project starts with a free 15 minute consultation during which we’ll:
Ask lots of questions about you, your lifestyle, and your garden goals

Give you our honest thoughts on whether we think we’re a good fit for each other
Our process ends with something we're both proud to share.

Rest assured, our free initial consultation includes a chance for us to get to know each other and decide together whether we’d make a good team.
Whatever you're envisioning for your garden, we’re here to help you take the first design steps with confidence.
About the Founder & Owner
I’m Jess, the proud owner of A Mum Who Gardens and - you guessed it - a mum and avid gardener.
The garden is my refuge, my place to recharge, my place to think about everything, and my place to think about nothing. For me, gardening has been restorative - recharging to my soul. Watching my little ones observe changes in the garden throughout the season, study the leaves, or search for worms in the soil? It fills my heart and reminds me that deep appreciation for the garden is contagious.
I want others to catch the gardening bug and derive the same joy and energy from gardening as I have. Hence why I founded A Mum Who Gardens.
My philosophy is that gardens need to do more than look pretty… Gardens should reflect the people who tend them, draw us outdoors, and work with our natural environment. I also believe that the happiest kind of gardening happens in stages where one step informs the next, not one massive project.
I’m excited to get to know more about you, too, as we work together on designing your garden.

Your Questions, Answered
-
We don’t work like other garden and landscape companies that are light on design and big on large, expensive hardscaping installations that often use the same manufactured materials on repeat.
Instead, we:
Help you create a garden design that reflects who you are and how you live
Encourage you to work in bite-sized project phases
Offer design packages tailored to only the amount of support you really want and need (we’ve got you, fellow DIYers!)
-
We offer garden design packages tailored to the level of support you want. If you don’t see a design package that fits your specific needs, let’s talk about it during our 15 minute initial consultation. No two gardens are alike, after all.
NOTE: While I do not directly oversee a landscape crew for installations, we happily refer clients to people we’ve trusted to plant in our own garden. We also empower DIYers with the information and support they need to plant properly on their own.
-
You’ll experience our collaborative nature as well as our honesty and straightforwardness. We pride ourselves on always giving the people we care about our candid input.
-
Emphatic yes. We consider and prioritize sustainability in all of our recommendations to others and in our own gardening decisions. This includes weighing specific plant selections, hardscape materials, irrigation needs, and products used to treat pests and disease.
In addition to guiding you toward eco-friendly gardening, we will also clue you in on the “stuff” you do and do not need to garden effectively. Spoiler alert: it’s actually quite simple!
-
Yes! While we’re not absolutists on native plantings, we use as many as we can in our own gardens and strongly recommend that others lean on them too. That said, we will walk through some important nuances when we work together. For example, people define “natives” in vastly different ways, and some natives are actually rather aggressive and probably not ideal for smaller residential landscapes. (Think: Virginia Creeper.) We’ll help you weigh the pros and cons of various plant selections with eco-friendliness front of mind.
-
Yes. We’re firm believers that if keeping your garden going requires constant supplemental watering, you’ve chosen the wrong plants, the wrong planting sites, or both.
We design gardens that, once established, can hold their own through periods of heat and drought. That is, after all, what we deal with in the Mid-Atlantic region and in many other parts of the country.
-
We gladly make referrals to other creators, artisans, and small business owners like us. We always do our best to support small businesses. Local nursery over big box stores is always where we’ll start.
-
We consciously choose not to use AI to generate our sketches and designs. And we’re confident you’ll be happy that we don’t when you see our deliverables. The design will reflect you and how you interact with your space.
Our landscape plans sometimes use 2D or 3D tools to help us translate the ideas we’ve discussed into a visualized format.
At A Mum Who Gardens, technology facilitates projects. but it’s us working together that generates the best designs.
-
For our own gardens, yes. But gardens are deeply personal spaces, and we can appreciate the beauty of multiple styles.
That said, there are some aesthetic commonalities that you’ll see across most of our design plans:
Strong preference for natural materials over manufactured ones. Think stacked flagstone instead of interlocking blocks and cedar wood fencing instead of white vinyl.
A healthy mixture of structure and wildness in plantings.
Mixed borders and hedges. Think a combination of beautiful evergreens of varying heights and hues instead of a wall of green giant arborvitae.
Garden zones or garden rooms. I’m always driving toward the garden being an experience and creating a sense of mystery or having an element of surprise.
There’s always beauty in helping others create the garden that reflects them.
